Now that fall has arrived, I can’t help but get in the mood for all sorts of festivities! And if you’re planning any sort of party for the season, one of my favorites that I’ve ever done is a Harry Potter Party!
There’s just something about the Harry Potter world that feels especially magical this time of year. From floating candles and Hogwarts-inspired decorations to Butterbeer, themed treats, games, and plenty of little wizarding details, there are so many fun ways to bring the magic to life.
Whether you’re planning a birthday party, Halloween celebration, movie marathon, or just looking for an excuse to gather your fellow Potterheads, I’ve rounded up 50+ magical Harry Potter Party ideas to help you pull it all together. You’ll find ideas for food and drinks, games and activities, decorations, party favors, and more—so grab your wand and let’s get started!
Harry Potter Party Decorations
The most essential part of preparing for your Harry Potter Party is to set the scene! Here’s a roundup of all the best decor ideas that will really transport you and your guests to the magical wizarding world!

- Floating Envelopes – Capture the chaos and intrigue that invaded the Dursley home that fateful week with this cascade of envelopes!
- Hedwig Balloons – A nice touch that makes it feel as if you’re in the Hogwarts owlery or the Great Hall as they swoop in with the day’s mail.
- Balloon Arch – This gorgeous and festive balloon arch will really set the party tone and can serve a great entry point or photo spot for your party.
- Floating Candles – An absolute essential for setting the vibe of the dining area and making it feel like the Great Hall!
- Wanted Posters – Depending on the vibe you’re going for, these set the tone for darker unease that is felt later in the series.
- “Have You Seen This Wizard?” – A great party prop where your guests can take pictures.
- Hogwarts House Banners – Another essential element to capturing the magic of Hogwarts and the Great Hall!
- Potions Bottles: I loved using these as decor! Use some glass or plastic bottles like these and these potion label stickers to make them.
- Hogwarts Book Covers – Another fun touch to use as decor on the side. Print out these covers and wrap them around books you already have in your home!
- DIY Wizard Wands – These wands are super easy to make and make great party favors for everyone!
- Ollivander’s Sign – Set up shop and let each wizard choose their wand, or – let the wand choose the wizard!

- DIY Brooms – These brooms are one of my favorite fall crafts in general! Not only are they great for a Harry Potter Party, they’re also great as Halloween decor! They’re easy to make, look amazing, and most of the materials are free.
- Stag Patronus – When we had our Harry Potter party, I had the idea that one of those light-up deer Christmas decorations would make the perfect stag patronus! Just pick a spot and plug it in. I even scattered some silver glitter confetti on the floor around it for extra sparkle, but that’s up to you.
- “Enemies of the Heir” Writing on the Wall – I really wanted to capture the creepiness of the writing on the wall in what appears to be blood from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, so I created the sign pictured above using a large roll of brown craft paper, red paint for the writing, black paint and a sponge for the “bricks”, and the line of spiders crawling!
- Floating Ghosts – I wanted to capture the ghostly element of Hogwarts, so I made these out of styrofoam mannequin heads and cheesecloth.
- Toilet Moaning Myrtle Printable – Print out an image of moaning Myrtle and place it on the inside of your toilet lid so guests get a surprise (and a laugh) when they have to go!
- Enchanted Sky Ceiling – If you really want to go all-out, recreate the Hogwarts Great Hall enchanted ceiling in your dining room!
- Floating Jack-O-Lanterns – If your Harry Potter Party is for Halloween, these floating jack-o-lanterns are the perfect addition.

- Platform 9 3/4 Sign – Make your guests feel as though they’re about to board the Hogwarts Express!
- Cauldrons – A must for additional decor or for placing food in.
- Spiderwebs – I like to add some spiderwebs as an additional touch to our potions bottles and books because I imagine a lot of dusty, long forgotten corners in some of those Hogwarts classrooms.
- Cupcake Toppers – An extra festive touch for your desserts.
- Three Broomsticks Drink Station – I love the idea of laying out drinks as though you’re at the Three Broomsticks! Grab a sign like this one as well as some drink dispensers and mugs.
- Honeydukes Candy Station – The best way to arrange an assortment of treats at a Harry Potter Party!

- Horcrux Scavenger Hunt – Grab my free printable and have your own Horcrux scavenger hunt! Use items from around your house to replicate each item on the hunt.
- Sorting Ceremony – Anyone who goes to Hogwarts has to be sorted upon arrival! There are a lot of different ways you can do this! One option is to have everyone take a turn sitting on a stool wearing the sorting hat and have a designated person to act as its voice and call out the house. You can also assign houses randomly by having people draw a slip of paper from a bowl. I’ve even seen cupcakes with different colored filling in the middle to represent each house!
- Play Quidditch – What better way to partake in the world of Harry Potter than playing Quidditch!?
- Bingo – A simple yet fun activity that’s great for kids and adults!
- Pin the Eyes on the Owl – Another classic but with a Harry Potter party twist.
- Honeydukes Party Favor Bags – These would make such a fun party favor for guests!
