Looking for a fun and whimsical craft for your kids? A container fairy garden is a simple, magical way to spark creativity and bring a bit of nature into your child’s everyday play. Whether you’re using a flower pot, a bucket, or even your garden bed, these miniature worlds invite kids to build, imagine, and explore using natural elements like moss, pebbles, twigs, and tiny flowers.
The best part? You don’t need a big backyard—container fairy gardens can live on a porch, patio, or windowsill, making them an easy and engaging activity for kids of all ages. Check out these ideas for an adorable container fairy garden!
1. Pick your container.

Choosing the right container is the first step in creating a container fairy garden your kids will love. The good news is—there’s no “perfect” option. Almost anything that can hold soil and drain water can become a magical little world. Think about where the garden will live (indoors vs. outdoors), how much space you have, and how involved your kids want to get. Shallow containers work well for simple scenes, while deeper ones give you more room to layer soil, plants, and tiny accessories. If you’re working with younger kids, lightweight and durable options are usually the easiest to manage.
It’s also fun to let kids help pick the container, especially if it’s something unexpected or repurposed. This adds personality right from the start and makes the whole project feel more like their own creation. Just make sure your container has drainage holes (or add some) to keep plants healthy and avoid soggy soil. Here are some ideas:
- Flower pots (terra cotta, ceramic, or plastic)
- Flower pot saucer
- Wooden crates or boxes
- Galvanized tubs or buckets
- Old teacups or mugs
- Baskets lined with plastic
- Window boxes
- Broken pots (great for layered “fairy village” designs)
- Large bowls or serving dishes
- Tin cans or metal containers
- Drawer boxes or small storage bins
- Tree stumps or hollowed logs (for outdoor gardens)
2. Make/decorate your fairy home.

Just like choosing a container, there are endless possibilities when picking a home for your fairies! You can buy a wooden bird house and decorate it yourself or create your own from scratch with nature materials like twigs and bark. My daughter really enjoyed being able to paint hers pink and purple, but I’ve also created one using an old can with some twigs and moss covering it. It’s totally up to you how creative you want to get! Here are fairy home some options:
- Wood fairy house painting kit
- Fairy house with bench and bird bath
- Ceramic fairy house
- DIY twig house

3. Gather your materials.

Finding all the little miniature accessories to use for our container fairy garden is one of my favorite parts! There are so many cute things you can use, from random things collected in nature to cute little accessories from the craft store. If your kids are like mine and constantly bring in rocks, acorns, pinecones, and flowers Here’s a list of ideas to get you started!
- Fairies
- Dinosaurs (If you have boys who might not be interested in fairies)
- Woodland animals
- Mushrooms
- Colorful pebbles
- Wood slabs
- Twigs
- Moss
- Artificial succulents
- Artificial flowers
- Bench, tables, and chairs
- Fence
4. Fill container with dirt and plants.

Fill whatever container you’ve chosen with soil and plant everything. If your container fairy garden is on the smaller side, succulents are a great option! Small confession: we didn’t actually plant any real plants in our garden.
So if you’re looking for something that you won’t need to take care of afterwards, that’s totally an option! I found some very realistic looking artificial succulents that I linked in the materials section above.
5. Decorate with the rest of your accessories!

Now lay out all of your materials and start assembling! Let your kids get creative and build the little container fairy garden of their dreams. The best part is that this can be done over and over again as they play with the different parts and pieces. This also would be a great activity for guests at a woodland or fairy party!
No matter the occasion, I know your kids will love creating their own whimsical container fairy garden as much as mine did! For more fairy activities, check out these nature fairy wings or these twig flower crowns!
