One thing I love about this time of year is creating new traditions with my family! I’m constantly on the lookout for new things to do at Christmas time, especially outdoors. Here are some outdoor Christmas traditions that are too magical not to add to your own list!
1. Go for a sleigh ride. Until this year, I thought sleigh rides were a thing of the past. But I just discovered that there are several places around my state (and probably yours too!) that you can visit and go for a sleigh ride! Maybe you were already privy to this knowledge, but my mind was blown! These are definitely the kinds of outdoor Christmas traditions that I’m looking to add to our list. What a magical memory to give your kids (and yourself)!
2. Take a holiday/light walk. Find a nice village, neighborhood, park, etc. that puts on a good light show and visit every year for a beautiful light peeping walk. Bring along hot chocolate in a thermos for good measure 😉 For a little something extra, try out this Christmas scavenger hunt activity!
3. Visit a Christmas tree farm. This is one of the more quintessential outdoor Christmas tradions, but for good reason! Even if you don’t actually decorate your own home with a real evergreen, these are still beautiful places to visit and perhaps have a few family photos snapped. A lot of tree farms also offer other attractions or features to add to the experience.
4. Gather evergreen and berries to decorate your home. If you live in a place where you can wander the woods and forage for some evergreen and berry branches to decorate your home, bundle up and get out there! It’s so peaceful wandering through the winter woods in search of the perfect woodsy accents for your Christmas/winter decor.
5. Decorate trees outside. Why stop at the tree inside your home? It’s just as fun to decorate the trees outdoors! Some ideas for more natural elements to decorate your outdoor trees include popcorn and cranberry garlands, cinnamon sticks, pine cones, wood slices, dried apples and oranges, twig ornaments, and reusable fabric bows. See ours that we decorated here!
6. Build a snowman. This one is obviously good all winter long, but I thought I’d include it anyway. Make sure to grab all the accessories or get creative and use what you find outside. Dressing up the snowman is the best part!
7. Go ice skating. There are so many great options for this one! Frozen lake or pond, downtown ice rink surrounded by lights, or iced path through the woods. Hit up that interwebs to see what exists near you and choose one!
